"- Sir! I came for my knife! - Where did you leave it? - In some sailor's bag. - What kind of knife was it? - Steel. Narrow blade, slightly bent. Didn't you see it? - Let's wait... Just slowly, please... What was the handle like? - Shell. - How many parts? - Made of one piece. - Then it's okay. I have the knife! - Where? - In my back." This is how Dirty Fred, the Captain, a novel written under the pseudonym Rejtő Jenő P. Howard, begins. It was published in 1940. You can now hear András Kern in the Hungaroton Rejtő series in his inimitable, entertaining performance. András Kern on the Jenő Rejtő series: At first, I wasn't one of the Rejtő fans, although it became fashionable again around my adolescence: everyone read him in the sixties. Of course, I knew a few details by heart, my friends kept quoting him. Then, as I played in his cabaret jokes later (on television and on stage), I started to take an interest in him, I learned about his fate, his biography, I had already read him; but now that we are turning about eight of his novels into audiobooks: now I have really gotten to know him... and I can say, he is great! Adventurous, twisty, good-humored (so to speak: laugh-out-loud), sometimes lyrical and constantly interesting... And the most important thing I realized (and this may be obvious): Jenő Rejtő is a very good writer! Although he disguises himself as a pulp novelist, he writes beautifully here and there, with beautiful words, good sentences, a dizzying sense of rhythm, his ability to create atmosphere is like that of the greatest... And I didn't know this, and I don't think any of you did either: so listen to it, it will be an experience! 1. Chapter One: Sir! I have come for my knife! 2. Chapter Two: Waiter José was asleep. 3.
